What Is A Misdemeanor?

In Michigan, a misdemeanor is generally defined as an offense which has a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail. The majority of misdemeanors are punishable by:

  • A maximum of 93 days in jail
  • $500 maximum fine
  • Court costs
  • Community service
  • Up to two years probation

Some misdemeanors are punishable by up to one year in jail, and a small number of misdemeanors are even punishable by two years in jail. Some cases involve license suspensions upon conviction. In other cases, you may be eligible for special treatment as a first offender or a reduction of the charges to a civil infraction.
